This large and thick 37cm long Greenstone Mere is a real beauty.
Made in New Zealand from NZ Greenstone (pounamu), it is a rarity, as these larger blocks of greenstone are hard to get hold of.
Its size is also a rarity, as many carvers only make smaller pieces. So if you are interested in getting one, don't delay, these never hang around for long, and then we are usually out of stock for months.
This is a full size mere patu. It measures approximately 36.8cm (14 1/2') long, and has a plaited wrist cord.
We recommend that you treat this taonga (treasure) with special care. Always grip the mere by its handle, with your hand through the wrist strap. Don't swing it by its cord.
Above all, just enjoy the beauty of a large piece of pounamu. These large pieces really show up nature's beauty, especially the shades of green in one piece.
In pre-European times, mere patu were carved over quite a long period of time, often carried by chiefs to denote their rank and power. Greenstone mere still are an important and valuable Maori heirloom.
